From MikeW: 28mm Ottoman Cavalry

Well this is my first post for quite some time as I have been struggling to get free time to paint.

It's a small three figure posting, but will be followed in the next day or so with another post - as I'm also nearly done with some Late 17th Century French Infantry...

So these little guys are representing Ottoman Heavy Cavalry in the late 17th Century, the figures were taken from a batch I got form eBay and were originally aimed to be Polish Winged Hussars.

However my collection is already pretty heavy in Winged Hussars and I have opted for the Warlord variety! These guys look generic enough to be any eastern heavy cavalry in my opinion!

So they are mounted on Hat Industrie - 28mm, Moorish plastic horses, these are good value at 12 per box. (I throw away the riders as I do not lie the figures, but you can often get these horses at less than 80p each - it all counts if working on a budget.

I added muskets, saddle holsters and bows and as ever I always use steel or brass spears for lances & pikes.

Added bow and Gripping Beast's Shield to this guy

The unseasonably hot weather in the UK has not done any
favours to the application of Army Painter's dip, will be adding some
thinners to get it to flow better on next batch

Second fella, simply added a bow to this one.

And a saddle holster, for his horse pistol

Final guy, he had a wheel lock Carbine added and a saddle holster

Angry end of an Ottoman Heavy CAvalryman!

From ClarenceH: 76 Models in Two Weeks!

That's it! Four units of Beja infantry (two with spears, one with swords, and one with rifles) for my Mahdist army!

And a few trees (I'm up to around a dozen - I've been fitting these into spare moments between units). Just twelve camel riders and a mounted Emir (got a head start on these today, though sadly I don't think I'll have much time tomorrow to make further progress over the weekend) and I'll be ready to march on the infidels!

I'm working on a small, straight forward scenario now, a reconnaissance in force by a British company to investigate reports of massing enemy troops in a nameless village east of Ginnis that could threaten the southern rail line. It will (hopefully) be the first shots in a mini-campaign!

From RossM: Misc 28mm - 7 points

Another small post with a few pieces that have been lingering around for too long.

First up is an old figure from Citadel or Marauder Miniatures back in the day. Always liked this figure and painted this one too match some skeletons from a previous AHPC.

Next up are a two pieces of scatter terrain from Games Workshop's Lord of the Rings SBG. These have been painted with an arid climate in mind and as a result only one has some additional scenic material added.

These will see a fair amount of use when gaming is able to start again in the future and will included games such as Mortal Gods and the Rampant series.

So where does this take the AHQC totals to? Well it will be no surprize that this isn't a high hitter on the points front however every little helps as they say

These are worth a grand total of 7 points - 5 for the skeleton and 1 each for the terrain pieces. This takes the running total to 135 points out of 500 or 27% so a little progress made.

Hope that you found this interesting

Cheers for now

AdamC: Top Sail Schooner

My Xebec Project left me with some extra bits and pieces and I used them to build some schooner. I made this one a Top Sail Schooner.

Top Sail Schooners were popular ships for trade and privateering.  They were swift sailors especially good as sailing close to the wind. Cargo capacity was relatively limited but for small high value cargos schooners were ideal.

I cut out the sails for these myself then realized I had not rigged the ship yet! fortunately I was able to get in enough rigging to make it work but I don't want to make that my regular approach.

JTinQT - Week Nine - More VBCW Government Forces - The DFF's

Hi All

Few more government forces in VBCW genre and pleased to get on to a unit I knew I definitely wanted to field, although militarily they had a terrible record. The "DFF's" or Damm Fine Fellows! This was also a play on the initials of the unit commander Dominic Farrar-Foxley, old Etonian, City of London banker and socialite with royal family links. A brilliant publicist Farrar-Foxley made sure that the unit had plenty of newspaper coverage where they were often referred to with the other nickname of "The Chaps".

Here are the first six figures, from Footsore with an additional very old Western "Doc Holiday" gunfighter figure from somewhere, anyway he had the appropriate head ware!

The Footsore figures represent the unit at the start of the conflict in civvies dress, although with his royal influence Farrar-Foxley was able to gain access to army equipment very quickly and later they adopted a more quasi army look. However the suits were typically from Marks and Spencer and very hard wearing so remained popular as a uniform throughout. I included the Footsore fictional "Bertie Wooster" figure with a few small adjustments and painted to fit in with the overall DFF unit look.

As mentioned the DFF's did have a terrible and incompetent military record. This is typified by the units destruction, hit in a friendly fire incident from its own mortar section during the Wimbledon Common skirmish. Still great to see more modern revisionist accounts stressing the value the unit had as a symbol of conservative English fightback.

Hopefully more to come next week .........

All the best Jez

From StuartL - Dutch Mill

Another small post from me this week. I have stuff on my workbench, but can't seem to find the time to get it done. Fingers crossed it'll be finished by next week.
In the meantime, I have painted up some more MDF terrain from Sarissa Precision. I picked up this windmill a while back. It's a truly massive piece of terrain. The top of the mill itself is about 9" off the ground. The sails add another 6" or so to the height and to the width on either side.

When I finished the kit, I didn't like the empty spaces in the sails so I glued some tissue paper over the backs and painted it with watered down PVA glue mixed with a drop of buff paint from vallejo. I think it gives a nice impression of canvas.

To try to add some extra detail to the piece, I wanted to make the MDF look more like real wood. To that end, I scraped a modelling saw across the panels to make some small grooves, then went over them again with a hobby knife to add some deeper marks. These stand out quite nicely after I painted the model in a watered down brown paint. I added some washes to add some colour to the wood. I tried drybrushing, but it didn't work out to well and now one side (above) is a bit messy. I may go back over it with brown at some point to tidy it up.

For all it's size, the mill building isn't that big in terms of AHPC terrain cubes. At 9" x 3" x 3" for the main structure it's only 81 cubic inches. However, since I'm feeling generous, I'll add a bit extra for the stairs, the wide base and the sails. That should round it up to 10 points, giving me a slight boost 809.5 (unofficial) points scored for this challenge so far.

KenR : 28mm Kingdom of Jerusalem Mounted Sergeants

The recruitment for the Kingdom of Jerusalem continues a pace with a new unit, this time it's Mounted Sergeants.

12 x 28mm figures from Fireforge Games, I've decided to arm these with hand weapons rather than lance which means there are less flags than normal. The large pennant had been painted using a decal from the Battle Flag Decal set as the base.

I do like the sense of motion you can get with these Fireforge figures, the plastic kits allows you to make subtle variations in the figures, the horse poses give the impression of motion and the deeper bases I like to use allow a staggering of the figures again giving that feeling of movement.

Looking at the Quarantine Challenge points total it's another 121 points taking me to 1308.

I have a unit of mounted Knights left to do before the force is finished but for the moment I am concentrating on finishing off my 7tv Baddies.
