From RossM: 28mm Spartan Musician (2 points)

Last summer the Spartan army for Impetus was repurposed on to 60mm front bases to allow more use with a variety of systems including ADLG and Hail Caesar. The paint work on this figure was slightly damaged during this process. Now touched up and rebased for use in Mortal Gods.

As there has been very little painting involved in this figure the points awarded for this will be two.

This takes the running total to 108 out of 500 or 21.6%

Hope this has been of interest to you

Stay safe and cheers for now.

From RossM: 2 x 28mm Greek Slingers (10 points)

Recently completed and based these Greek slingers are from Foundry's original range of Ancient Greeks.

As a result they are slightly shorter and thinner build than the World of the Greeks range however, this does not stop them being used in the same armies.

As these were the last two left to paint there was no option to vary the poses on this stand; it was advancing with sling as shown or nothing.

As they are broadly generic figures they can be used for most armies in this period so will likely be a part of the Spartans and future Caesarian and Carthaginian armies for DBA and ADLG.

In points terms for the AHQC these are worth:

2 x 28mm infantry at 10 points

This takes the running total to 106 points out of 500 or 21.2% completed

Hope that you found this interesting.

Stay safe and cheers for now.

JTinQT - Week Six - Swiss XBow Skirmisher

Dear All,

Pretty pathetic single figure post again this week. In this years painting challenger I did a Swiss skirmish unit for Basic Impetus. This was a two figure unit base but decided skirmishers look better with three figures so just painted and added another in - luckily it fitted nicely in the middle space so an easy job to add in.

Think this figure is from Wargames Foundry - an old Perry sculpture. Well think all Foundry are old sculpts aren't they? Anyway just a little job out of the way.

Cheers Jez.

KenR - 28mm Italian Wars Artillery

A quick addition to the things that go boom in my Italian Wars Army. I found this gun and crew already undercoated in a box under a box in a cupboard I hadn't looked in for a while ! Heaven knows how much stuff is hidden around the Home of Yarkshire Gamer 😁

Thirsty Work !
The figures are from Wargames Foundry who do a few different gun and crew packs, they are old casts but like the Gendarme they very much stand up to today's more modern sculpts.

A quick 30 points taking me to 734 so far in Q Challenge, got some more Cops to post tomorrow.

From NoelW: Another Mixed Bag

This week I thought I wouldn’t get much painting done as I’ve spent most of my time rebasing a Union army. When my wife and I were courting (that’s right, in the nineteenth century) one of the things we did together was wargame. Although our armies had quite a few imaginative flourishes, they were essentially Airfix Union and Confederate. In our current lockdown state, we were reminded of this and she has suggested a revival game, though our armies are no longer Airfix. Mainly Wargames Foundry, in fact.

As they’ve not been out of the box for a dozen years, they needed reorganising so we can use Black Powder. Hers first. So I’ve been sitting out in the sunlight, prising figures from various old cardboard stands and creating units of 6 bases on 50mm square mdf.

I’ve been standardising on 50mm for several reasons. I’ve been using it for cavalry for some time, with 40mm for infantry. So three cavalry bases are almost the same length as four infantry: 150mm to 160mm. Using two ranks of foot to a base gives me normal foot units of 16 figs or 6 cavalry in one rank. That’s been my basic approach for some years. However, in the last three years, I’ve been building most new armies as individual figures on single bases, to make their use for skirmish games, sieges and rough terrain easier. In mass battles I put them in sabots, generally four figures per sabot. These sabots have to be 50mm square.

As I rather like lots of variety in my forces, I’ve some armies built of units of 12 individual figures in those sabots, so still the 150mm frontage. Small units are not everyone’s cup of tea, but they’re (obviously) quicker to paint, meaning more scope for variety in the army as a whole, and they can be brigaded together into “brigades” of 24 figs, if I want that. My wife’s Union army is basically units of 24 fig foot and 12 figure cavalry, now on 50mm bases to fit that general pattern.

So here’s the rebasing for this week, about two thirds of her army. The sharp-eyed amongst you will see that the rearmost unit and general are Confederate. I sneaked those in!

No points for the rebasing, of course, but I’m going to count them off against my British Intervention Force target, as these forces will form the opponents for the BIF who're on the way to support my Confederates.

But I also have managed to find time to finish some of the painting I began the four weeks ago. Two armies: the Zulu War, which is a current particular fascination, and Afghans which, though strictly for the North West Frontier, I’m including as irregulars in my Sikh Wars project.

For the Zulu Wars, I’ve four infantry that I found skulking in the back of a drawer, a mix of manufacturers:

three mounted Frontier Light Horse

and six dismounted

And five Natal Carbineers scouting the plains of Zululand:

These are all Perry figures.

The Afghans are also designed by the Perrys, some from their current range, some from their Wargames Foundry Afghan and Sikh sculpts. Firstly, 8 irregular infantry:

And finally a command stand, which I’m particularly pleased with:

For the imaginary scoreboard, that’s 9 cavalry and 19 foot, so 185 points, all of which, Stuart, will add to our little Bolt Action side challenge, to give me a current total of 275 points. I'm closing in on you!

However, I’m slipping behind my overall plan, having filled only 13 of the 16 slots I should’ve completed by now.

From SimonG: HYW Wagon Train

Well for my next offering the first of what will ultimately be two wagon trains. This setup is intended to be stationary and representing a loading/unloading situation. It seems the foreman and the driver aren't exactly getting along 😆

The wagons, mules and contents are Front Rank while the figures are all Wargames Foundry. I think it came together nicely and also tried out a focus stacker for the first time for some of the pictures which gives you a lot more ease in photography at high detail close in settings.

Focus Stacker Output 1

Focus Stacker Output 2

The wagon driver is a modest conversion to drill out a hole for the two leads which are simple polyamide thread coated in superglue -- given more time I'd have made better attachments on the mules, I need a source of tiny rings for tying things off too!

Next up some more mounted knights, that Hemp guy I mentioned in another thread 😏

From SimonG: HYW Terrain and Civilians

My first stab at making terrain. Concerned about storage but wanting something that looks good I decided to go for the Sally 4th Terra-Formers modular system. This can work out as pretty expensive (at least £10 per piece completed) and time consuming but I think so far the results look good. I've done two pieces -- a cottage enclosed by a wattle fence and a medium sized hill. Unfortunately I've now run out of raw materials (paint and filler) so I'm not sure I can work on any more but ultimately there will be 30 of these 12" square pieces allowing for a variety of table layouts. I've also scaled things like the fence so that they work for 15mm as well as I'm inclined to give this size a try in a future project. On order are trees so I can do a forest with a pull out centre to allow a unit to be located in the forest.

The cottage is a simple Tabletop Workshop plastic kit -- odd how I can do fine detail work on a 28mm figure but working on a house it all goes sloppy! The fence is simply cocktail sticks interwoven with strips of thick paper then coated in PVA and roughly painted -- a little time consuming but looks pretty good I think. Only trick is supergluing at start and end and making the strips as long as you can so as to avoid need for double posts at the ends.

The farmer and his wife and children are Wargames Foundry/Perry and came out nicely. The other bases that predate the AHQC are mostly Front Rank, with a stand of Perry pavisiers and a modified Perry Jehanne (modified to hold a standard which was home printed from this source)

Next up is a baggage train with a mix of Front Rank and WGF/Perry.
