From DrQ: a Dwarf and a Tortle

Sorry for the late posting for the week. My city has been interesting the past few days—nothing like riots on top of a pandemic!

In any case, two small offerings for this week. First up, the Reaper Bones version of Pathfinder's iconic ranger, Harsk:

This is one of the first generation Bones minis, so the detail isn't nearly as crisp as it is with the later formulae. Still, he painted up alright.

Second is a kit-bashed tortle merchant I made from bits from Super Dungeon Explore and a Reaper Bones. The tortle is from the Caverns of Roxor box, and the pack is off of the Dreadmere Tortoise. The banner is a 3x5 card that has been hardened with super glue.

My plan is to use this little guy as a traveling merchant NPC in a future D&D game. My hope is that a tortle with a few high-power spells will be beefy enough so that a murder hobo party doesn't just kill him and grab his wares.

Stay safe!

From DrQ: Crab People and a Mountain Climber

A small offering for this week.

First up I painted this trio of aquatic denizens.

The mechanic-lady in the middle is of unknown providence. A friend gave me the mini back before the end of the world, and she had been sitting on my shelf for some time. Her two bodyguards are Shell Crackers of House Hadross, from CMON's Wrath of Kings game. I picked up a few miscellaneous miniatures from this line at the start of the pandemic on a sale from Miniature Market. The game itself looks uninspiring mechanically, but for something like $4US I figured these crabby bois could find a home in a D&D game when everything reopens. The bases for all of them are DIY cobblestone made from polymer clay.

However, most of my week was taken up painting this little darling:

This is Ice Climber Candy—a limited release, master-class miniature for Ninja Division's Super Dungeon Explorer game. She's painted pretty much to her concept art here (i.e. it wasn't my idea to have her with a pink parka and pink hair!). I can't see her getting much table time as either a D&D miniature or in the aforementioned game, but she was fun to paint. I really had a chance to work on my blackening skills on her gear and the fur.

Next week I'm hoping to build and paint some more sci-fi terrain, but we'll have to see where the muses take me.

Stay safe.

From DrQ: Soda and More Zombies

A day late on my weekly update due to end-of-term grading at my uni. Despite the busy week, I did manage to finish off a few projects. The first being a pair of soda vending machines from Reaper Miniatures:

I decided to paint one up with a fantasy base and scheme to go with Super Dungeon Explore from Soda Pop Minis.

The other was painted for my 'drimgark' futuristic project, and has a decidedly distressed painting scheme.

Additionally, I finished off the last of the Stilt Town Zombies from aforementioned Super Dungeon Explore.

There are two pudge zombies, who aren't really that interesting painting-wise.

The Shambler Priest, however, was a lot of fun. Stripy pants, green flames, a playing card in his hat brim (barely seen in this shot) all made for some interesting work.

Lastly, there are the two spawn points. In the game mechanics, these are work like the old Gauntlet video game. As long as these are left untouched, they will keep spawning baddies. I tried to add a bit of OSL from inside the house to match the unnatural glow that ties the group together.

Speaking of which, here's a group shot of all the zombies from the last two weeks:

Stay safe, and happy Mother's Day.

From DrQ: Zombies!

This week I kept plugging away on the Stilt Town Warband of Super Dungeon Explore by Soda Pop Minis.

These six guys are the basic swamp zombies—simplest paint job on them consisting of lots of washes and some OSL on the eyes.

The two on the left here are the prowler zombies—more speedy but less damage. On the right is the mini-boss Gruesome George. I've tried to tie all these together with similar skin tones and glowing eyes.

Finally, I managed to paint up the hero of the box, Survivor Marie-Claude. I really like how she came out. The miniature is inspired by a cosplayer from Canada who has worked with Soda Pop quite a bit. I enjoy the improvised weapons and think she'll fit in well as a tavern keep NPC in my next campaign—whenever that happens!

One last shot of Marie-Claude brandishing her rolling pin and skillet.

With a little luck I'll finish off the last of the zombies next week and get on to some other projects.

Stay safe everyone!

From DrQ: Some Terrain and a Zombie Bunny

Taking pics last week I realized that I had no suitable modern or futuristic terrain to serve as a backdrop—everything I have is medieval fantasy or steampunk. This was clearly a problem if I want to play games in a contemporary setting, let alone the drimgark future. So, this week I did a little trash-bashing and pulled together these 8 4"x2"x2" container boxes.

The problem with large pieces like this is that you are never sure when to stop. I've painted four layers of weathering, tagged them with various styles of graffiti, and added various torn or whole posters. And yet, they still seem rather sparse when looked at from a distance like this. I could probably spend a few week adding various details, but I'm not going to sweat it at this point. They're here to block line of sight and be more thematic than a plain box or a pile of books, and they excel at that task.

Additionally, I painted up some barrels to sever as smaller scatter.

Not much to say about these. They are part of Reaper's new Bones Black line. Supposedly they don't need to be primed. I have added a top coat of Mod Podge matte, like I do to all terrain; but we'll have to see if the lack of priming has an effect on their durability.

Finally, I did manage to finish one zombie this week:

Mr. Bitey here is from Super Dungeon Explore's Stilt Town Zombies warband box. While he looks like the stuff of nightmares, he's actually a pet that can help an allied hero.

Stay safe everyone!

From DrQ: In the Drimgark Future There is Only Cute

A happy weekend to you all!

Having finished off the rank and file of my chibi Sisters of Battle 40k Kill Team, this week I've completed the character models. Here's a group shot of them all together:

And here are front and backs of each:

As mentioned before, the minis are from Impact! Miniatures' Sibling of Conflict kickstarter and are on Skull Forge Scenic bases. I just recently discovered that the whole line of minis can be downloaded as STL, if you join the Patreon of their creator Heriberto Valle at Capsule Chibi.

On the painting docket for this upcoming week is a swarm of chibi zombies, including a killer rabbit!

Stay safe!

From DrQ: Chibi Sisters of Battle

So the problem with being a professor during a worldwide pandemic is that educating still goes on; but suddenly you are doing video editing, sound editing, and various other online tasks in addition to your regular lecturing, grading, and other professorial duties. Basically what I'm saying here is that time to paint is at a premium at the moment.

Today I have for you all a trio of troops for my chibi 40k Kill Team.

I am painting the whole kill team based on Order of Our Martyred Lady, and getting the scheme right in this distorted format has been a big part of this past week's painting time.

The minis are from Impact! Miniatures' Sibling of Conflict kickstarter and are on Skull Forge Scenic bases.

With a little luck I might even get the rest of the squad done by next week....

From DrQ: First Post after a Slow Week

Hey all,

Longtime lurker but first time participant here, and I couldn't be more excited! Unfortunately, this has been a slow week for hobbying with only one piece finished and a half dozen more held up due to delayed packages and poor priming days.

So without further ado, I present to you my meager contribution for the week: Super Dungeon Explore's Masterclass Kringle from this past Christmas.

As a side note, my personal taste in painting runs somewhere between twee and weeb. You can expect to see a lot of anime and chibi from me over the weeks.

I have an entire chibi Adepta Sororitas Kill Team squad just waiting for some suitably 40k bases to come in the post. So hopefully my next post will be more robust.
