The Analogue Hobbies Quarantine Challenge

Hi All!

A few weeks ago, when the world was realizing that the Covid-19 outbreak was escalating to be a VERY serious thing, we were just beginning to wrap-up the 10th Annual Painting Challenge. With more and more people going into isolation, keeping safe and taking care of those around them I thought it might be helpful to provide a space for people to keep in touch, post their hobby projects and to simply unwind. So here I present 'The Analogue Hobbies Quarantine Challenge'.

____________________________________________

Here are the 'rules' (such as they are) for the Quarantine Challenge:

1) For those who may be new to our Challenge format this is NOT a painting contestWe do not judge the skills of participants' brushwork. Rather this is a place for people of all skill levels to post their work, provide and receive encouragement and to enjoy the camaraderie of others who enjoy this 'little hobby' of ours.

2) To keep the administration of the Quarantine Challenge to a minimum, all participants will be responsible to post their own entries on the blog. I will simply act as moderator to help keep things on the rails.

3) We'll use the same posting guidelines as we've used in the Painting Challenge :
  • Provide good title information, including your name and the subject of your post;
  • 1000 pixel limit along the top of your image (please do not link from an image hosting services);
  • Input sensible and useful metadata in the 'Labels' field.

4) Unlike the Annual Painting Challenge, the Quarantine Challenge will have no formal points tracking to measure output. Instead I have a simple challenge for my fellow hobbyists: Complete at least one hobby task per week and post it to the Quarantine blog.  Also, I strongly support (and take great delight in) the issuing of paint duels / side-challenges, etc. amongst the participants. If there is a keen interest in this, I can set up a separate page listing the duels and challenges.

5) The Quarantine Challenge will extend until the first day of Summer, June 20th.

____________________________________________

There are 100 slots open for the Challenge (this is Blogger's limit, not mine), so if you're interested in participating drop me a note (curtcampbell at mac dot com), or leave a comment below and I'll add you to the blog. After you get your invitation to the blog you'll be good to go.

The Quarantine Challenge will start at 11:59pm Friday March 27th. The roster will remain open until it is filled.

If you have any questions just send me a note.

Stay safe and remember: be excellent to one another.

-Curt

    6. So many excellent answers. I could do something along the lines of historical accuracy such as in the film 300!, you know The Zebra Riding Zombie Charge at the Battle of Zama! (makes as much sense as that giant battle rhinoceros)

  16. Count me in (think I've already emailed...I can't remember what I did yesterday, let alone last week). I may not get much done as I'm still working (a so called 'Key worker' for a charity) but its not for lack of unpainted metal. My Lead mountain is shamefully large and anything that encourages me to keep painting is a good thing.

  17. Hi Curt - Please count me in - Something once a week should take our minds off things - Cheers Jez

  19. Sign me up! Be a good distraction from work.

Do standard Challenge rules apply? Or is this more a free for all? Can we continue to explore Challenge Island?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm assuming you didn't read the rules above... :)

I don't see why we couldn't continue exploring Challenge Island (mind you, without the bonus points or treasure). Hmm, perhaps we could come up with some other challenges as well. Maybe a few thematic ones with targeted deadlines. Something to think on.

      Delete
    2. I did, but was unclear about it, hence asking!

You could do it in reverse. Escape from Challenge Island, where all players start at Snowlord’s Peak with a challenge and have to visit a certain number of spots before leaving the Island from one of the ports.

      Delete
    3. The big question is whether unfinished Challenge X (or earlier) entries meet the Quarantine post permissions, or do we have to start new stuff from bare primer?

      Delete
    4. The Escape from Challenge Island is a brilliant idea... at least we can fantsize wih the world outside from our homes

      Delete
    5. Of course, some of us have already escaped Challenge Island once! (But great fun, even so).

      Delete
    6. Unless there are specific duels/side-challenges that stipulate figures must start-from-primed, then you can feel free to submit entries that originated as partially done works-in-progress. So, if you have a bunch of half-finished projects sitting in the wings this is a perfect time to get them done.

In fact, maybe we should make a point of declaring the completion of a long-languishing project/figure so we can get the appropriate acclimation an applause from the Challenge community. :)

    7. NoelRW, a crack team of epidemiologic commandos who committed the crimes they were framed for can always drag you back to the Island ;)

    8. Half finished projects? I’d be in my element.

  24. Are we going to have a separate page for side duels and challenges or should we just post them here?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good question. I think that for ease of administration, those folks involved in duels should keep track of them amongst themselves and perhaps post updates as special submissions to keep the rest of us entertained to how their unfolding.

  25. Sounds perfect! I'm not currently in isolation but this is exactly the hobby community activity I need right now!

    1. Unless you’re COVID-19 positive, you’ll be in quarantine, not isolation. Proper terminology is essential for statistical precision at this time.

  27. I'd like to propose a side challenge/paint duel.

    The Bolt-action Brush Battle.

Duelists attempt to paint the most minis from the era of the bolt action rifle, roughly 1825-1955 (The first bolt action rifle was developed in 1824 and the last major conflict before it was largely replaced by automatic weapons was the Korean War).
Any scale, any army, any type of miniature is fine. Models need not have an actual rifle, just fit into the appropriate period, so aircraft, ships and buildings are all acceptable.
Scoring will be done by participants using the usual AHPC scoring system found here: http://thepaintingchallenge.blogspot.com/2019/11/x-marks-spot-10th-annual-analogue.html.
Participants are responsible for tracking their own scores.

    Any takers?

  29. Infamy! Infamy! duel: just in case it's been lost in this very long thread, the duel is starting to roll with 3 potential duelists signing in. Duel open to anyone interested in the Ancient period independently of the rule¡ sets. Interested challengers, drop me an email at gce(dot)mail33(add)gmail(dot)com for further details

  30. Curt, if there's an open slot I'd like to participate. Work has exploded in the last few days with the whole world wanting to work from home - I'm in IT Infrastructure for a global company - so have been rushed off my feet and need some relaxation time! MikeW

  31. Hey Curt, if there is a slot available I would love to participate! I have since been accepted to a grad school, have minimal school work and a backlog of minis waiting to be painted!
